Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored six runs in the seventh inning to overcome a three-run deficit en route to a 9-7 win over the Florence Freedom in a game that lasted three hours and twenty-five minutes on Wednesday night.
Trailing 6-3 heading into the eighth, Zach Kometani led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout. Chris Cowell singled to center to score Kometani and make it 6-4. D'Marcus Ingram and Ryan Still both walked to load the bases for Taylor Wrenn who doubled off the wall in right-center, clearing the bases and putting the Beach Bums on top 7-6. Florence went to the bullpen to bring in Jose Velazquez to face Jose Vargas, but the move backfired as Vargas sent Velazquez first offering deep into the Northern Kentucky night for a two-run homer and a 9-6 TC edge.
The Freedom did not go quietly, scoring a run in the bottom of the eight on a Jeremy Hamilton single, plating David Harris. Florence then loaded the bases in the ninth before Nick Capito got Jacob Tanis to fly out to left, ending the game. It was the fourth time on the night the Freedom left the bases loaded as Florence stranded 16 runners overall.
Traverse City scored the initial run of the game in the top of the second when Chase Burch hit his third homer of the season for a 1-0 lead. Florence came back with a four-run bottom of the inning, keyed by a bases loaded single by Tanis. The two squads then swapped a pair of runs in the third. Chris Squires (1-0) earned the win with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Capito picked up his second save of the year. Brent Choban (2-2) suffered the loss for the Freedom.
Offensively, Wrenn had a pair of hits and four RBI, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Still had two hits and reached base three times.
The rubber game of the series is on Thursday at 6:35 pm with Jacob Clem (2-3, 6.31) on the mound for the Beach Bums against Jason Wilson (1-2, 2.54) for Florence. Coverage begins with the Budweiser Traverse City Beach Bums Pregame Show on Sunny Country 101.9 FM at 6:15. The Beach Ums return home on Friday for a FANtastic Fireworks Friday against Joliet at 7:05 pm.
