Lake Erie Takes Series Opener against Evansville

(AVON, OHIO) - The Lake Erie Crushers beat the Evansville Otters 8-3 at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night.

Evansville started out with the lead after a second inning rally against left-hander Paul Fagan. Following back to back infield singles and a sacrifice bunt, shortstop Greg Fontenot singled home catcher Billy Killian with a base hit to right field.

Lake Erie surged right back for the lead in the bottom of the inning. Designated hitter Russell Moldenhauer hit a 1-2 pitch from right-hander Wynn Pelzer over the left fielder for a ground rule double, scoring two runs on the play.

Ahead by a run, Lake Erie then scored the next six runs in the game.

Trailing 8-1, Evansville staged two late rallies. Infielder Taylor Black hit a solo home run in the eighth inning and fellow infielder Steve Marino also brought in a run with an RBI single in the ninth.

Lake Erie would hold on to win the game and improve to 30-25. Evansville stands at 23-32.

Fagan (6-3) threw a complete game for the win, allowing three runs on nine hits. The loss goes to Pelzer (0-2) who yielded 11 hits and six runs in 5.0 innings.

Evansville will look to tie up the series on Friday night with lefty Matt Zielinski (4-4, 4.55 Earned Run Average) on the mound against right-hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (4-5, 4.87 ERA).
