Crushers score eight, Fagan goes nine in 8-3 victory

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers scored eight times on 13 hits at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday evening, and Paul Fagan went the distance as the Crushers defeated the Evansville Otters, 8-3, to take the series opener.

The complete game was Fagan's (6-3) third of the season. The win for the Crushers (30-25) was their third in a row, while the loss for the Otters (23-32) was their third straight.

Evansville got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Billy Killian and Matt Sheely reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning, and Killian came around on Greg Fontenot's RBI base hit.

Lake Erie answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Adrian Ortiz reached on a fielder's choice and J.C. Figueroa followed with a single. Russ Moldenhauer drove them both in on a two out double to center.

The Crushers added to their lead in the fourth inning when Brian Erie singled to score Daniel Bowman, and the Crushers put the game away with a three run sixth inning. They sent all nine to the plate, and scored three times on four hits. Erie struck again with a two run base hit, and he scored the final run of the inning when Figueroa reached on a fielder's choice.

The Red and Black attack pushed two more across in the seventh. Andrew Davis started the inning with a single, and made his way to third on Bowman's double. Kellen Kulbacki and Erie followed with groundouts, which scored Davis and Bowman respectively.

The Otters added single runs in the eighth and ninth. Taylor Black belted a solo homerun on the eighth inning, and Steve Marino drove in their final run with a two out single in the ninth.

Fagan allowed all three runs on nine hits, fanned four, and issued no free passes in the contest to score his fourth home victory of the season. Wynn Pelzer (0-2) allowed six runs on 11 hits over five innings and suffered the loss.

Seven out of the starting nine hit safely for the Crushers, while batters 4-9 in the order hit safely twice. Erie went 2-for-4, and drove in four runs on the evening. Moldenhauer, Davis, Bowman, Kublacki and Correa all turned in two hit games as well. Bowman scored three times in the contest. The Crushers have scored 18 runs on 24 hits in their last two games.

The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Evansville Otters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday night. Right hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (4-5, 4.87) will start for the Crushers, and the Otters will counter with left hander Matt Zielinski (4-4, 4.45). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
