Thursday, July 19 - 7:05 p.m. CT
Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL
Game #55 - Home Game #31 (23-31), (11-19)

Last time out.
The Gateway Grizzlies beat the Slammers 5-1 in a rain-shortened seven-inning game at Silver Cross Field. Gateway pounded away immediately at Joliet pitching, scoring three runs in the first inning off Slammers starter Jim Schult. Schult walked the first two runners of the ballgame, and Jerod Yakubik brought them around on a triple, and scored later on a Chris McClendon single. The Grizzlies tacked another on for the 4-0 lead in the second off a fielding error by Joliet, and took a five-run lead in the third on a solo home run by Rogelio Noris. The Slammers added their run in the bottom of the third. With runners on the corners, Gateway botched a double play, allowing David Fox to score and crediting Patrick Noris with an RBI fielder's choice. Jim Schult struggled for Joliet, surrendering five runs through six innings and taking the loss before Daniel Carela entered in relief prior to the rain.
For Starters.
Steven Maxwell has lost three of his past four starts and is coming off a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Southern Illinois Miners on July 14. He went six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits. The Slammers have scored a combined two runs behind Maxwell over his past two losses. In Maxwell's five losses this season, the Slammers have averaged 2.6 runs per game. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.
Windy City Woes.
The Slammers went 4-8 last season against the Windy City ThunderBolts and they are 2-4 so far in 2012 against their rivals from Crestwood.
Netzel doing work.
Shortstop Brad Netzel has started to really pick up the pace at the plate this season. He has three multi-hit games over the past four contests with six RBI during that time frame.
Some relief.
After a rough June (5.74 ERA), the Joliet bullpen has bounced back in July as they currently sport an ERA of 3.61 this month. Overall on the season the Slammers' bullpen has an ERA of 4.32.
More walks than strike outs.
All-Star starter Abel Nieves is the only Slammer with more walks (29) than strike outs (18).
Lis on fire in July.
DH and Hitting Coach Erik Lis is hitting .380 so far this July, tops on the team. Lis is still looking to find his power as his four home runs this year are well short of his 20 home run pace from last season.
Error indicator.
The Slammers are 7-25 in games when they make an error. They are 16-6 in games when they do not.
Out-hit.
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 17-7, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 3-22.
