Beach Bums Fall in Heartbreaker
July 19, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
The Traverse City Beach Bums had the tying run on third base in each of the final three innings, but were unable to bring the run around to score as the Rockford RiverHawks escaped with a 1-0 iwn over Traverse City.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Evan Button singled to lead off the frame and move to third on a throwing error. Three batters later, Jet Butler singled through the middle to score Button.
The Beach Bums would rally in the ninth as with one out Marcus Nidiffer doubled and was pinch-run for by Matt Howard. Two batters later, Brian Heere worked a walk with Ryan Still following suit to load the bases with two away. The comeback was not in the offing, however, as Jose Vargas lined out to end the game.
Both starters were magnificent in the contest. Scott Dunn (1-2) allowed one run on four hits over six innings, striking out a career high six batters. Kyle Schepel (3-1) was just a bit better, allowing just four hits over 7.1 scoreless innings. Garrett Granitz worked out of the ninth inning jam for his fourth save of the year.
The middle game of the series at Rockford comes up on Friday with Jacob Clem (3-4, 3.12) on the mound for Traverse City against Drew Rucinski (4-1, 2.54) for the RiverHawks. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. with the pregame show on Sunny Country 101.9 beginning at 7:45. The Beach Bums return home on Sunday against the Joliet Slammers for a Family FUNday Sunday and Classic Car night sponsored by Hagerty Insurance. All kids who run the bases after the game will receive a free ticket to the Beach Bums Family Carnival and Michigan National Guard Community Appreciation Day on July 28.
