Normal CornBelters News Release
Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, allowed a big 1st inning and could never fully recover, falling to the London Rippers 13-10 Thursday evening at the Corn Crib. Matt Schimpf (3-7) picked up the win for London, while Normal's Tyler Stovall (1-7) took the loss.
A two-run, bases clearing double from designated hitter Mark Samuelson in the top of the 1st allowed the Rippers to get on the board early. Three batters later, catcher Jim Vahalik again emptied the bases for London, this time with a triple, bringing in three more runs. Vahalik would come home on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Justino Cuevas, pushing the lead to 6-0 after just a half inning of play.
Vahalik again punished Normal pitching in the 2nd, knocking in his fourth run of the night with a sacrifice fly to left, allowing left fielder Joash Brodin to cross the plate, and extending London's advantage to 7-0.
The 'Belters offense broke through in the 3rd when an RBI single by third baseman Pat Dockendorf brought in shortstop Andrew Cohn. Two batters later Dockendorf scored Normal's second run of the night, coming across on an RBI groundout by right fielder Bobby Rinard. That set the table for designated hitter Steven Felix, who sent his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot, over the wall in right, cutting the London lead to 7-4.
Back-to-back bombs from Samuelson and second baseman Brad Augustin in the top of the 4th along with a two-run blast by Brodin in the 5th extended the Ripper lead to 12-4.
The 'Belters did not quit as a two-run RBI single from centerfielder Ty Wiesemeyer cut the London advantage to 12-6 in the bottom of the 6th.
Again London answered as Augustin added some insurance for the Rippers in the top of the 7th, bringing in Brodin with an RBI single to left. Normal got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Rinard came across on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Ernie Banks Jr.
The score would hold at 13-7 until the bottom of the 9th when Felix hammered his second home run of the night, bringing in Wiesemeyer and Rinard, and cutting the Ripper lead to just three at 13-10.
The series continues Friday night at 6:30 when Normal sends Daniel Britt (3-5, 5.26 ERA) to the hill to take on London's Yohan Gonzalez (3-4, 4.09 ERA) at the Corn Crib. Pregame begins at 6:20 on WJBC.com.
