Gateway Grizzlies News Release

SAUGET, Ill. - A three-fold of homeruns supplied by Jerod Yakubik, John Shelby, and Chris McClendon helped lift the Grizzlies past the Boomers of Schaumburg Thursday night, as Gateway stole an important 4-3 decision in game one of a three-game series.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth frame, Gateway's (30-24) lefty first baseman Yakubik blasted a solo-homerun over the right field wall to put the home club on the board and cut into the Boomer (33-22) margin. After a scoreless fifth, Shelby and McClendon would do the rest. McClendon (1-for-3) notched a two-run homer to tie the contest, and Shelby (2-for3) followed with a go-ahead solo home run that would prove the eventual winning tally.

"It was fun out there," commented Shelby after the game. "We are pumped as a team to get this win and take game one in this series. That being said, it doesn't stop here - tomorrow is another day and another game. We are ready and focused."

Grizzlie starting pitcher Paul Tremlin tossed five innings of seven-hit baseball to earn a no decision in the two-hour and twenty-five minute affair. The Gateway bullpen again afforded a superb showing, as four Grizzlies were called on to seal the pivotal match. Logan Mahon (1-1) claimed his first professional win, tossing one inning and allowing only one hit with a strikeout.

Matt Kuna (2-1) was charged the loss for the Boomers, pitching six-and-two-thirds and being roughed up for four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

The Grizzlies are now winners of three in a row and have claimed seven of their last nine contests. The club will return to GCS Ballpark tomorrow night for game two against Schaumburg, and right handed ace Tim Brown (5-2) will make the start for the Grizzlies.
