Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs, the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, on Wednesday announced that defenseman Maxim Kuznetsov has been added to the roster and defenseman Jonathan Zion has been released from his professional tryout agreement. Kuznetsov, 26, has appeared in 16 games for the Kings this season, recording an assist (0-1=1) and 20 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound native of Pavlodar, Russia, did not make his season debut until November 27 because of failing to report to training camp due to travel visa problems (he was placed by the Kings on the suspended list on October 7). He has also played in three games with the Monarchs this season, recording zero points and two penalty minutes. The Kings designated Kuznetsov for assignment on January 7. Originally selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first-round (26th overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Kuznetsov was acquired by the Kings from the Red Wings on March 11, 2003, along with Sean Avery, Detroit's first-round selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft (Jeff Tambellini) and Detroit's second-round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, for defenseman Mathieu Schneider. He has 10 points (2-8=10) and 137 penalty minutes in 136 career NHL regular season games with the Kings and the Red Wings, and 27 points (8-19=27) and 121 penalty minutes in 170 career AHL regular season games with the Monarchs, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and the Adirondack Red Wings.

Zion, 22, has appeared in eight games for the Monarchs this season, recording two assists (0-2=2) and six penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 180-pound native of Nepean, Ontario, has also appeared in 21 games for the Monarchs ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, recording 22 points (6-16=22) and 10 penalty minutes. Originally selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fourth-round (110th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Zion has five points (2-3=5) and 30 penalty minutes in 26 career AHL regular season games with the Monarchs, the Portland Pirates and the Mighty Ducks.

The Monarchs return to action at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, January 16 when they take on the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center. They also are scheduled to host the Pirates at 7:35 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday, January 17. Immediately following Saturday's game, fans are invited to go to the Holiday Inn's Grand Ballroom for New Hampshire's biggest 70's party, sponsored by Rock 101 and featuring the Monarchs players.
