January 14, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins announced today that they have recalled left wing Mike Gellard from the Trenton Titans (ECHL), and reassigned rookie goaltender Peter Hamerlik to the Reading Royals (ECHL). Gellard will practice with the P-Bruins today and is expected to be in the lineup on Friday night when the Bruins face off with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Gellard, 25, was reassigned to Trenton on Monday. He has 2-1-3 totals and 16 PIM in 29 games with Providence. The 6'1", 185-pound native of Markham, Ontario is in his second professional season. He tallied 5-11-16 totals and 24 PIM in 63 games with Providence last season, and was the co-recipient of the team's Community Service Award. Gellard played four years at St. Lawrence University (ECAC) from 1997-2001, and in his senior year became the first player in ECAC history to lead the conference in scoring while being named Outstanding Defensive Forward. Gellard signed with the Boston Bruins as a free agent in the summer of 2001, but missed the entire 2001-02 season, due to colitis.
Hamerlik, 22, is in his first full professional season after a three-year junior career with the Kingston Frontenacs (OHL). He began this season with the Augusta Lynx (ECHL) before being recalled by the P-Bruins on December 19. He was 1-1-1 in three games with Providence, with a 1.91 GAA and .939 save percentage. Hamerlik stopped 31 shots in a 3-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs on December 26 for his first career AHL win. He also played one game with the Bruins last season, stopping 40 shots in a 4-4 tie at Worcester in his professional debut on October 27. Hamerlik, a 6'1", 205-pound native of Myjava, Slovakia, was the Boston Bruins' fourth pick, 153rd overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
