LOOKING AHEAD:
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton hosts Toronto on Wednesday night (7:05 ET) in the first meeting between the clubs. The Penguins have won four of their last five at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza, where they are playing 12 of their next 14 games. The Roadrunners began a seven-game road trek with a loss and a tie in St. John's over the weekend, and currently sit seven points out of the last playoff spot in the North Division. The Pens' Michel Ouellet leads all AHL rookies with 19 goals this season; Toronto's Doug Lynch is second among rookie defensemen with 21 points.
St. John's brings a four-game unbeaten streak into Chicago on Wednesday (7:00 CT, 9:30 NT). Jeff Daw has recorded five points in three meetings with the Wolves this season, but Chicago has killed off 15 of 16 Maple Leafs power plays in going 2-1-0 in the season series. Winners of six of seven at home since Christmas, the Wolves enter play four points out of first place in the West Division, while the Leafs are just a point back of second-place Rochester in the North. Steve Maltais and rookie Karl Stewart each has a point in six straight for the Wolves, and Dan Corso has four points in three games since joining Chicago last week.
Unbeaten in five, Hartford hosts Portland on Wednesday (7:05 ET) in the Pirates' first contest after their 10-game points streak (6-0-3-1) was snapped on Saturday. The Wolf Pack have swept the teams' first five meetings this season, outscoring Portland 15-5 in the process. Hartford has opened up a five-point lead atop the Atlantic Division, and is one of three teams (Bridgeport, Grand Rapids) on pace for 100 points midway through the regular season. The Pack's Jason LaBarbera leads the AHL with 15 victories and six shutouts, and the clubs rank one-two in the AHL in team shutouts, with nine (Hartford) and eight (Portland) on the year.
