Springfield Falcons News Release
Worcester, MA â Right wing Mike Glumac tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Worcester IceCats to a 3-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons at Worcester's Centrum Centre on Wednesday evening. Goran Bezina scored the lone marker for the Falcons. IceCats goaltender Curtis Sanford turned aside 29 of 30 shots to register his fifth win of the campaign. The loss snapped Springfield's three-game point streak.
The IceCats struck first in the game when defenseman Trevor Byrne's shot from the right point banked off the skate of Glumac, who was parked at the left edge of the crease, and into the net. The goal came with 3:35 remaining in the opening period.
The Falcons pulled even on Bezina's fourth goal of the season 9:58 into the second frame. On the goal, Bezina collected a rebound and scored with a backhand after Sanford stopped rookie Kiel McLeod's redirection of a centering pass from the corner by Peter Ferraro.
However, Worcester regained the lead eight minutes later. Glumac potted his second goal of the night after forward Jay McClement fed him the puck in the slot from behind the net. Pelletier made an initial save on Glumac's first shot, but the right wing tipped in the rebound to make the score 2-1.
Worcester defenseman Terry Virtue carried the puck down the left side of the Falcons zone and was able to squeeze a shot between Pelletier's right leg pad and the post to score an insurance goal 3:31 into the third period. The goal was Virtue's second against the Falcons and fourth overall this season.
Following Virtue's goal, the Falcons pressured to get back in the game. Frank Banham and Mike Stutzel each hit the post midway through the final frame. Springfield outshot the IceCats, 12-3, in the third period.
Springfield netminder Jean-Marc Pelletier made 24 saves. Pelletier started in place of David LeNeveu in the game due to the rookie being stricken with a case of food poisoning.
With his two-goal effort, Glumac has scored five versus the Falcons this season. The Niagara Falls native leads Worcester in goals (14) and points (28) this season.
The Falcons will look to avenge Wednesday's defeat on Friday when the IceCats will visit the Springfield Civic Center. Game time is 7:35 p.m. For ticket information, please contact the Falcons team office at (413) 739-3344.
