San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- Trevor Koenig is making it look easy these days, and set yet another West Coast Hockey League record tonight. He made 39 saves en route to his sixth shutout of the season, a new league single-season record. The Gulls also won their 11th straight game tonight, taking sole possession of second place.

For San Diego (19-10-1), it's the longest winning streak since an 11-game run in 1998-99. The longest winning streak in league history is 15, set by the Gulls in 1995-96.

Koenig, who was announced earlier as the WCHL Goaltender of the Week for the third straight week - fourth time this season - now has a personal best 10-game winning streak. During that stretch, he has five shutouts and a 0.83 goals against average. The all-star netminder leads the league with 18 wins, an overall 1.74 GAA and six shutouts. The Anchorage Aces only have four more wins than Koenig has shutouts this season.

San Diego drew first blood tonight 18:50 into the first period on a R.J. Enga power-play goal. Samy Nasreddine worked the puck to Kevin Grant, who fired a rocket towards rookie netminder Joel Martin, making his professional debut tonight. Enga, stationed in the slot, redirected the shot past Martin for his first marker of the night.

Enga gave San Diego a 2-0 lead with his second of the game - 15th of the season - 6:19 into the middle period. With the man advantage, the Gulls once again got the puck to Grant at the blue line. Grant corked a hard slap shot that went wide, but caromed off the boards right on the tape of Enga, who flipped it over a sprawled Martin.

Bakersfield (16-11-5) had its best opportunity late in the second, but Trevor Koenig's point-blank save on Christian Skoryna kept the Condors off the scoreboard.

The lone highlight of the third period was when the scoreboard lost power - the second time of the game. Neither team posed an offensive threat in the final frame, which was just fine for Koenig and company.

Notes: San Diego has outscored its opponents 48-12 during their 11-game run... Mark Pederson and Dean Tiltgen both had their eight-game point streaks snapped tonight... With an assist on Enga's second goal, Cory Cyrenne extended his point streak to six games... Enga needs to play in the Gulls' next three games to reach 500 straight in his pro career... Dennis Purdie remains on injured reserve... Mike Garrow remains with the American Hockey League's Utah Grizzlies... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the AHL's Hershey Bears...

The Gulls continue their homestand Saturday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs at 7 p.m. Travel Mugs, presented by Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, will be given to the first 5,000 fans. San Diego then welcomes Idaho for three games next week. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
