GREENSBORO GENERALS

The Generals fell to the Reading Royals last night 5-3 at home. Greensboro's Pete Gardiner opened the scoring midway through the first period for a 1-0 lead, but Reading responded with three unanswered goals in the second to take a lead they would not relinquish. Chris Bell closed the gap to 3-2 early in the third period for the Generals, only to have Reading regain their insurance goal. Gardiner's second goal of the night with 11:09 left gave Greensboro some time to tie the game, but they couldn't force overtime.

READING ROYALS

The Royals defeated the Generals 5-3 last night. After spotting the Generals a 1-0 lead through one period, Reading's Brian McCullough struck early in the second to tie the game. Alex Kim put the Royals ahead to stay with five minutes left in the second, and Steve Rymsha's goal minutes later made the score 3-1 entering the third period. Greensboro cut the lead to 3-2, but Colin Pepperall regained Reading's two-goal lead, and Brad Rooney sealed the game with an empty net goal with seven seconds left.

¨ Last night's loss was just the second time this season they lost a game when leading after one period (10-2-1).

ABOUT THE GAME

This is the fifth of six meetings between the Generals and Royals this year, and the second of back-to-back games between the clubs at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Generals are 2-2-0 against Reading this year, with each team winning and losing once each at home, and each team scoring 15 goals a piece. The final game of the season series is on January 18 in Reading in the final game before the All-Star Break. NEXT HOME GAME: The Generals travel to Richmond for a 7:35 contest tomorrow night against the Renegades. Greensboro then kicks off a four game homestand starting Thursday at 7:00 against the Charlotte Checkers. The Generals will claim the Carolina Cup for winning the season series between the two teams with a win on Thursday. Greensboro also has home games next Friday at 7:30 versus the Richmond Renegades and Saturday at 7:30 against the Peoria Rivermen.
