Greensboro Generals News Release

GREENSBORO, NC - The Greensboro Generals defeated the Reading Royals 5-1 at the Greensboro Coliseum tonight behind the unlikeliest of heroes. Left wing Matt Chandler, who had scored one goal all season, recorded a natural hat trick en route to victory. He becomes the seventh General player to turn the trick this season. With the win, the Generals improved to 22-9-4 on the season, while the Royals fell to 18-19-1.

Following a scoreless first period, Chandler recorded the first goal of the game 5:48 into the second period. Chandler scored his second goal on a deflection of a Mark Turner shot to put the Generals on top 2-0 at the 9:24 mark. With just 49 seconds remaining in the second, Chandler completed the hat trick with a top shelf goal that would send the Generals into the third period with a 3-0 lead.

Greensboro continued the scoring feast with a goal by Shane Campbell early in the third. The Royals spoiled the shutout bid of Generals netminder Jamie Hodson on a wrist shot by Mat Snesrud, but Greensboro's Pete Gardiner finished off the scoring with a shorthanded goal for the final margin. Despite falling one goal shy of a shutout, Hodson still had a spectacular night, stopping 48 shots on the evening.

The Generals take to the road to face the Richmond Renegades tomorrow night with a 7:35 start time. Greensboro will return home on Thursday, January 9th to face the Charlotte Checkers. Fans can take advantage of Thirsty Thursday (dollar drafts), as the Generals will play for the Carolina Cup, an award shared annually between the two teams for the best head-to-head record between the two franchises. Fans can listen to the game on WPET 950AM and www.greensborogenerals.com.
