Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Catcher Seby Zavala launched a game-tying, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Charlotte Knights dropped the finale of their six-game series to the Gwinnett Stripers by a score of 12-9 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon from Truist Field.
Down by a score of 8-5, the Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to push the game into extra innings. The comeback effort stalled, however, when the Stripers battled back to score four runs in the top of 10th inning. The Knights added one more run in the bottom of the 10th but came up just short in the final game of the opening series.
RHP Zack Burdi (0-1, 20.25) was charged with the loss after he allowed four runs (three earned) over 1.1 innings out of the Charlotte 'pen. The loss dropped Charlotte to 1-5 on the early season.
The Knights got off to a quick start in the first inning of Sunday's contest. Third baseman Jake Burger connected on his first career Triple-A home run, a two-run blast in the first off Gwinnett starter Kyle Muller. Burger finished the game 1-for-5 with the home run and three RBIs. Second baseman Marco Hernández had a team-high three hits on the day to push his batting average to .381.
Zavala continued his hot-hitting on the season and went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, the game-tying home run and two RBIs. Zavala, who is hitting .318, has hit safely in all five of his games with the Knights this year. He has homered in back-to-back games.
Gwinnett DH Orlando Arcia paced the team's offense for a second consecutive day. Arcia, who homered in Saturday's game, launched three more home runs on Sunday. He finished the game 3-for-4 with four runs scored, the three home runs and four RBIs. Gwinnett reliever Edgar Santana (1-0, 27.00) allowed three runs over just one inning of work and earned the win.
The Knights will now have an off day on Monday before beginning a six-game series against the Norfolk Tides on Tuesday at 7:04 p.m. from Truist Field. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and CharlotteKnights.com. Gates for the game will open at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening and it's Bark in the Ballpark presented by Williams Subaru.
