Iowa Tosses No-Hitter, Wins Series against Indianapolis

DES MOINES- The Iowa Cubs pitching staff tossed a combined no-hitter to win the series against Indianapolis Sunday, by a final score of 2-0.
Shelby Miller (3.0), Tommy Nance (3.0), Brad Wieck (2.0) and Ryan Meisinger (1.0) spun the first combined no-hitter for the Iowa Cubs since September 1, 1997 against Omaha.
Nance helped his own cause when he hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, scoring Andrew Romine to get Iowa on the board.
Abiatal Avelino added some insurance for Iowa in the bottom of the eighth, singling home D.J. Artis to grow the lead to 2-0.
Meisinger entered in the ninth and recorded the final three outs for Iowa to complete the no-hitter, and take the series from Indianapolis.
Iowa goes on the road for the first time in 2021 Tuesday, for the first of a six-game set against the St. Paul Saints, Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.
POSTGAME NOTES:
This is not Iowa's first no-hitter against Indianapolis, they no-hit the Indians on the road on August 25, 1974 in a 7-0 victory. Iowa's starting pitcher for that game was Homer Stinson.
The I-Cubs most recent no-hitter was on May 7, 2014 when Chris Rusin no-hit New Orleans. The last time Iowa threw a no-hitter at home was completed by Reggie Patterson on August 21, 1984 against Omaha.
Along with not allowing a hit, Iowa's pitching staff allowed just three Indianapolis batters to reach, all via the walk. They punched out 15 batters after striking out 16 in their last game, Friday night.
Today marked the first game of the series that a team didn't score in the first inning. The team that scored first in each game won the game.
In his first start of the season, Shelby Miller spun three scoreless innings allowing just one base runner on a free pass while striking out five.
