Stokes Jr.'s Contract Selected by Pirates

May 9, 2021 - International League (IL)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

Today the Pittsburgh Pirates selected the contract of outfielder Troy Stokes Jr. from Indianapolis to replace Ke'Bryan Hayes, who was moved to the 60-day injured list with a left wrist injury, on the 40-man roster. Stokes Jr. will become the first active member of Indy's roster to make his major league debut in 2021.

Stokes Jr., 25, began the season on Indianapolis' roster and hit .222 (2-for-9) with a pinch-hit home run through his first four games at Iowa. In 2020, he suffered a fractured right hand during Summer Camp and sat out the entire 2020 season after undergoing surgery. He was claimed off waivers from Detroit from Pittsburgh on Jan. 12.

His contract was first selected by Milwaukee in November 2018, and he entered the 2019 season rated as the Brewers' No. 15 prospect by Baseball America. Stokes Jr. was originally selected by Milwaukee in the fourth round (116th overall) in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.

Indianapolis' first-time callups are presented by Franciscan Health
