Charlotte Knights News Release
(LOUISVILLE, KY) -- The Charlotte Knights concluded their three-game series against the Louisville Bats on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss in 10 innings from Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, KY. RHP Michael Kopech, the number two prospect in the Chicago White Sox system, made his fourth start of the season and was sharp for the Knights, but did not factor in the decision.
Kopech, 21, allowed just one run on just one hit over six marvelous innings. The hard-throwing right-hander also struck-out eight batters on the day and walked just two. Over his last two starts, Kopech has now fanned 18 batters over 11.0 innings pitched. For the season, he is 0-1 with a 2.14 ERA.
The Knights scored their lone run of the game in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice-fly RBI off the bat of catcher Alfredo Gonzalez. With the Knights ahead by a score of 1-0, Louisville battled back against Kopech in the fourth inning. Louisville's D.J. Peterson tied things up with an RBI double. The game stayed knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the 10th inning.
In the bottom of the 10th frame, the Bats used the new extra-inning rule to their advantage. With a runner placed on second base to start the inning, Louisville's Blake Trahan dropped down a sacrifice bunt on the first pitch he saw from Charlotte RHP Rob Scahill (1-1, 5.40). Charlotte third baseman Ryan Brett fielded the ball and made a throwing error, which allowed Louisville's Steve Selsky to score the game-winning run. Scahill, who threw just one pitch in the inning, was charged with the loss and an unearned run.
The Knights will now have an off day on Thursday before opening a six-game homestand on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. The Knights will begin the homestand with a three-game series against the Norfolk Tides on Friday at 7:04 p.m. Pre-game radio coverage of Friday's opener will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.
KNIGHTS KNOTES: The Knights finished the road trip with a 2-4 record... INF Eddy Alvarez went 1-for-4 and has now hit safely in all four games he has played in this season... RHP Jeanmar GÃÅmez tossed two scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 1.64 on the season. Wednesday's scoreless outing was his fourth over his last five games... As a team, the Knights stole three more bases to give them a league-leading total of 20 on the season... Despite Wednesday's loss, the Knights are 9-4 against the Bats since last season.
