Louisville Bats News Release

The Louisville Bats (7-9) won its second straight game against the Charlotte Knights (8-11), grabbing the series on Wednesday afternoon by a 2-1 score. It was the Bats' second extra inning game on the homestand, improving to 2-1 in extra innings overall on the season under the new International League rules.

Bats starting pitcher, right-hander Robert Stephenson (1-2, 2.95) had an interesting outing, going 4.0 innings and surrendering just one earned run on two hits, walking eight and striking out one. He threw 89 pitches and 43 strikes. Stephenson set a career-high with the eight walks, but greatly limited the damage by allowing just one Charlotte Knight to score in the top of the third inning. He lowered his ERA on the season from 3.12 to 2.95.

Knights starting pitcher, the flame-throwing righty Michael Kopech (0-1, 2.14) was excellent, pitching 6.0 innings and giving up one earned run on just one hit, a double off the bat of D.J. Peterson, walking two and striking out eight Louisville Bats. Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision with the score knotted 1-1 from the fourth until the game went into extras.

Reds infielder Eugenio Suarez went 0-for-3 with a walk on Major League rehab assignment, now reaching base in four of seven trips to the plate after a 1-for-2, two-walk performance in Tuesday night's 5-1 victory.

Bats relievers Kyle Crockett, the rehabbing David Hernandez, Jimmy Herget and Zack Weiss got the job done, combining for 6.0 innings of shutout baseball to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.

The Bats walked it off when Steve Selsky, who got to start the bottom of the 10th inning on second base under the new extra innings rules, scored on a throwing error made by Charlotte third baseman Ryan Brett . Blake Trahan laid down the sacrifice bunt before Brett made a wild throw that allowed Selsky to cross the plate and give the Bats their second series win of the season.

Louisville is off on Thursday before beginning a three-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday, with right-hander Jackson Stephens (0-1, 7.62) slated to go for the Bats in the road start. The Bats are back at home starting on Monday, April 30 against the Columbus Clippers, with left-hander Cody Reed (0-0, 3.00) expected to get things started for the Bats on their homestand. Single game tickets are available at batsbaseball.com.
