Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights battled back in the bottom of the ninth inning to score two runs, but fell just short in the opening game of their six-game series against the Nashville Sounds by a score of 6-4 on Tuesday night from Truist Field. The win was Nashville's 13th straight.
Shortstop Matt Reynolds roped a two-run double in the ninth to cut Nashville's lead to just two, but the Knights failed to push any other runs across in the opening game of the series.
Charlotte right fielder Luis González led the way offensively for the Knights with a two-run homer. His second-inning blast helped the Knights take a 2-1 lead, the only lead of the game they had on Tuesday. Nashville scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and added another in the ninth for the victory.
First baseman Gavin Sheets had two hits and scored two of Charlotte's four runs on the night. Sheets extended his hit streak to seven consecutive games.
LHP Matt Tomshaw (0-2, 5.92) was saddled with the loss after he allowed five runs on six hits over five innings of work. Chicago White Sox LHP Jace Fry tossed a scoreless sixth inning on his major league rehab assignment. In three appearances with the Knights this season on rehab, Fry has five strikeouts over three scoreless innings.
Tuesday's game marked the first time in history that the Knights and Sounds played against each other.
The two teams will continue their six-game series on Wednesday with a 7:04 p.m. game from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and CharlotteKnights.com. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for Wednesday's game three matchup.
