Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
MOOSIC, PA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders dropped the series opener against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 5-2 Tuesday night at PNC Field. Lehigh Valley opened an early edge that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre could not overcome.
The IronPigs jumped to a four-run lead in the top of the first inning against RailRiders' starter Nick Green. Major League rehabber Scott Kingery doubled off the right field wall to start the game and advanced to third on a single by Mickey Moniak. C.J. Chatham singled in Kingery for a 1-0 edge and Rafael Marchan singled in Monizak to extend the lead. Former RailRider Ruben Tejada singled in both Chatham and Marchan to stake the IronPigs to a 4-0 lead.
Lehigh Valley starter Cristopher Sanchez struck out seven, walked two over the first three innings and didn't allow a hit until the fourth. Trey Amburgey and Derek Dietrich singled in the fourth and both scored on a double by Armando Alvarez to halve the deficit at 4-2.
The RailRiders had chances in each inning from the fifth in, but ultimately could not manage any additional support, leaving 12 runners on base, including 10 over the final six innings. The IronPigs added an insurance run against the RailRiders bullpen in the sixth. Darick Hall doubled in Edgar Cabral to extend the Lehigh Valley lead to 5-2.
Green (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits over four innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Bryan Mitchell (2-0) earned the win in relief of Sanchez, who left after three and two-thirds. J.D. Hammer pitched around a walk and a single in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Alvarez paced the RailRiders with a pair of hits while Chris Gittens walked three times. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's lineup worked nine total walks on Tuesday.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Lehigh Valley continue this six-game series on Wednesday night at 6:35 P.M. Adam Warren and Adonis Medina will start for the RailRiders and IronPigs, respectively. For tickets or more information, visit www.swbrailriders.com.
