Indians Take Series Opener over Clippers, 5-3

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Indians broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single from Bligh Madris in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Columbus Clippers and take the series opener on Tuesday, 5-3.

With the win, the Indians ended a seven-game losing streak, their longest since the 2014 season. Columbus has now lost eight consecutive games of their own.

After four scoreless innings, the Clippers (8-16) scored one run in the top of the fifth inning and another in the sixth with home runs by Oscar Mercado and Bobby Bradley.

The lead did not hold long as the Indians tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Indy took advantage of back-to-back Clipper errors to cut the the deficit to one run, and Christian Bethancourt knocked in the tying run with a single to center field.

The Indians (12-12) took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning with back-to-back walks to Stokes Jr. and Bethancourt before Madris singled to score Stokes Jr. Indy loaded the bases with a walk to Andrew Susac and relief pitcher Robert Broom walked Anthony Alford and hit T.J. Rivera to extend the Indians lead to 5-2.

Ryan Lavarnway hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to bring the Clippers within two but relief pitcher Tyler Bashlor (S, 2) ended the inning with a strikeout to earn the team's first save since May 15 vs. Toledo.

Max Kranick made his Triple-A debut for the Indians and tossed five one-run innings with four hits allowed on six strikeouts. Kyle Keller (W, 1-0) earned his first win of the season throwing two scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Major league rehabbers Phillip Evans and Colin Moran both made their first rehab starts with the Indians in the win. Evans contributed a single to right field in the first inning.

Indianapolis and Columbus continue the six-game series on Wednesday at Victory Field with first pitch scheduled for 1:35 PM ET. RHP James Marvel (0-0, 3.72) is set to take the mound for Indianapolis vs. LHP Kirk McCarty (3-0, 4.40).
