
Knights Drop Game Five to Tides 7-6 on Saturday

(NORFOLK, VA) - Despite a ninth inning rally, the Charlotte Knights fell to the Norfolk Tides on Saturday night by a score of 7-6 from Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. The Knights loaded the bases with just one out in the ninth, but scored just one run, falling a run short to the Tides in game five of the series.
The Knights scored first on Saturday and did so in the top of the second inning against Norfolk starter Kyle Brnovich. Third baseman Ryder Jones, who led the Knights with three RBIs, scored the game's first run on an RBI groundout off the bat of right fielder Blake Rutherford. The Knights scored all six of their runs over six separate innings on Saturday. The team's second run of the game came in the fourth inning when catcher Carlos Pérez scored on a wild pitch.
With the Knights ahead by a score of 2-0, the Tides mounted a comeback against LHP Wes Benjamin, who made his Charlotte Knights debut. Benjamin allowed a two-run home run to center fielder Johnny Rizer, which tied the game at 2-2. Benjamin allowed just two runs (the two-run home run) over four innings. He walked three batters and struck-out six.
The Knights and Tides traded runs over the next several innings, however, Norfolk scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. The Knights scored one run in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Jones continued to be an RBI machine for Charlotte. He had an RBI single in the fifth inning and drove home two more runs on sacrifice flies in the seventh and ninth innings, respectively.
Left fielder Dwight Smith Jr. and catcher Carlos Pérez continue to be bright spots for the Knights. Smith and Pérez had two hits apiece on the evening.
Charlotte LHP Anderson Severino (0-1, 11.57) was saddled with the loss after he allowed two runs over just 0.2 innings. In all, the Charlotte bullpen was charged with five runs on the night.
The Knights will conclude the six-game series against the Tides on Sunday afternoon with first pitch on tap for 1:05 p.m. from Harbor Park.
