Toledo Mud Hens News Release
TOLEDO, OH.: Kody Clemens extended his hitting streak to five games to start the year, but the Rochester Red Wings strung together three big offensive innings to defeat the Toledo Mud Hens, 9-0, on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field.
A sharp single through the left side in the ninth inning extended the streak for Clemens, who is now hitting .348 (8-23) through his first five assignments of the season.
RHP Beau Brieske got the ball to make his Triple-A debut as well on Saturday night. The Arizona native surrendered five runs on seven hits and struck out four Red Wings batters in five innings.
RHP Drew Carlton was another bright spot for the Hens out of the bullpen. He allowed just one hit and fanned five over two frames of work.
Ryan Lavarnway reached base all three times at the dish on Saturday, mashing an eighth inning double as part of his performance.
A two-run home run by Joey Meneses in the first inning put the Red Wings on the board. Another two-run bomb, this time by Nick Banks, and a sacrifice fly by Cole Freeman in the fourth inning capped the damage done against Brieske, 5-0 Red Wings after four stanzas.
The first four Rochester hitters reached against RHP Alex Powers in the sixth. Donovan Casey doubled in Andrew Young. After a Tres Barrera knock, Freeman slammed a two-run triple to bring him and Casey in. Jake Noll plated Freeman with a double as well.
The Red Wings staff earned their first shutout victory of the season. RHP Jefry Rodriguez started the contest and racked up five strikeouts. LHP Sam Clay (1-0) secured the win, keeping Toledo off the board in the fourth and fifth. RHP Tyler Clippard, LHP Jace Fry, RHP Jordan Weems, and RHP Hunter Harvey all tossed scoreless stanzas.
NEXT UP: The Mud Hens will seek to close the series on a positive note Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m.
