Kings Sign Bernier to a Two-Year Contract Extension

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension with goaltender Jonathan Bernier, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Bernier, who had one year remaining on his current deal, is now under contract through the 2012-13 season.

In addition, the Kings have assigned forward John Zeiler to the Monarchs.

Bernier, 23, split last season between the Monarchs and the Kings. With Manchester, Bernier was 30-21-6 with a 2.03 goals-against-average, .936 save percentage and nine shutouts in the regular season as earned the American Hockey League's Goaltender of the Year Award. Among AHL goaltenders he ranked: first in save percentage, first in shutouts, first in saves (1,707), second in goals-against average, third in wins and third in minutes played (3,424). Bernier was also named an AHL First-Team All-Star and was the starting goaltender for Team Canada at the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic.

The 5-foot-11, 186-pound native of Laval, Quebec, was also 10-6 with a 1.81 goals-against-average, .939 save percentage and three shutouts in 16 playoff appearances last season, leading the Monarchs to the AHL's Eastern Conference Finals. Among AHL goaltenders in the playoffs he ranked: first in goals-against average, first in save percentage, first in shutouts, first in saves (458), second in wins and second in minutes played (996).

With the Kings, Bernier appeared in three regular season games with the Kings last season, going 3-0-0 with a 1.30 goals-against-average, .957 save percentage and one shutout. He has appeared in seven total NHL games (all with the Kings) and has a 4-3-0 mark with a 2.84 goals-against-average and .906 save percentage.

In 2008-09 Bernier was 23-24-4 with Manchester. Among AHL rookie netminders he ranked: first in shutouts (5), first in shootout wins (6), fifth in wins, fifth in goals-against-average (2.40) and seventh in save percentage (.914). He was named AHL Goaltender of the Month in March 2009.

Zeiler, 27, had 20 points (11-920) and 31 penalty minutes in 65 regular season games with Manchester last season and added seven points (4-37) and four penalty minutes in 16 playoff games. In 86 career NHL games (all with the Kings) he has five points (1-45) and 87 penalty minutes.
