Amerks Open 2010-11 Season Saturday in Toronto

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans open their 55th season in the American Hockey League against the Toronto Marlies on Saturday, October 9that Ricoh Coliseum. The 3:00 p.m. afternoon matinee will mark Rochester's first season-opener on the road in 12 years since the 1998-99 campaign and will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk. The matchup will be the first of eight meetings between the North Division rivals this season.

Rochester is 19-21-2 all-time against Toronto after posting a near perfect 7-0-0-1 record and claiming 15 out of a possible 16 points throughout the season series a year ago. The Amerks have a record of 26-21-7 in season-openers, having outscored their opponents 202-182.

The Amerks' home-opener is scheduled for the following night on Sunday, October 10th as the defending back-to-back Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears make their way to The Blue Cross Arena. The oldest rivalry in the American Hockey League will be renewed as the two cornerstone franchises participate in the historic kickoff to the league's 75th anniversary season. As part of the festivities, the Calder Cup will be on display that evening and Native American country star Crystal Shawanda will also be on hand to perform the national anthem. The Amerks will also wear unique throwback jerseys for the special event. Everyone in attendance that night will take home a 2010-11 Amerks magnet schedule, courtesy of M&T Bank. Rochester travels to Hershey on Saturday, October 16th to complete the home-and-home series.

Only a handful of returning players remain in Rochester while several new faces will grace the lineup for the Amerks this season. Led by veteran forward Chris Taylor, and newly acquired 38-year-old Michael Nylander, Rochester's familiar faces include goaltender Tyler Plante, forwards Mike Duco, Michal Repik, Evgeny Dadonov, third-year pro Mike Caruso and 2009-10 AHL All-Star defenseman Clay Wilson.

Among the rookies making their professional debuts this season include defensemen Adam Comrie and Colby Robak, in addition to the highly touted netminder Jacob Markstrom, Florida's second-round draft pick from 2008 who makes his transition to the North American game.
