Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - A bases-clearing three-run double by Kalian Sams and a three-run homer by Daniel Carroll highlighted an eight-run third inning as the Clinton LumberKings cruised to an 11-4 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Alliant Energy Field.
Mario Martinez homered to the pavilion in left for a solo shot - his seventh - to put Clinton ahead 1-0 in the second inning. Tim Morris had already singled home Carroll in the third when Sams stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Facing TinCaps' right-hander John Hussey, Sams worked the count full before depositing the payoff pitch off the wall in left-center. Morris, Martinez and James Jones all scored for a 5-0 advantage.
Henry Contreras then singled home Sams and four batters later, Carroll skied a Hussey pitch over the wood wall in left-center to complete the eight-run frame. Carroll's third clout of the season helped the LumberKings establish a new season-high for runs in an inning, eclipsing six (accomplished twice, most recently in the third inning the previous night against Lake County).
The 9-0 lead seemed safe, but right-hander Erasmo Ramirez ran into trouble in the form of three solo homers by the TinCaps. Nate Freiman, Jeudy Valdez and James Darnell all lifted off to cut the lead to 9-3. Ramirez (W, 5-2) would give up the three runs on a total of four hits over 5.0 innings.
Right-hander Brandon Josselyn allowed another run in the seventh and left the bases loaded for left-hander Brian Moran. Moran (S, 3) induced Valdez into an inning-ending pop-up and did not give up a hit over 2.1 innings, striking out the side in the ninth as well.
Hussey (L, 4-3) surrendered nine runs, five earned on nine hits over 2.2 innings. Fort Wayne right-hander Jon Berger worked 3.1 scoreless innings before lefty Pedro Hernandez yielded two more in the eighth.
Sams (1-for-4, 2B, 3 RB) and Carroll (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RB) paved the way for the Clinton win, the club's third-straight. The LumberKings are now a season-best nine games over .500, but remain a game behind second-place Quad Cities for second in the West Division.
The LumberKings (35-26) continue the series against the TinCaps (30-32) tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. Right-hander John Housey (4-1, 1.71) will make his second start of the season. Post-game fireworks presented by Jewel-Osco and WQAD-TV will follow the game. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
