Chiefs Win 5-1 Friday

Peoria, IL - On the night they retired Greg Maddox's #31 jersey, the Peoria Chiefs took the opening game of their series against the Great Lakes Loons by the score of 5-1 Friday evening at O'Brien Field. The win moves the Chiefs to 33-28 on the season, but they were unable to gain ground in the standings with a Cedar Rapids win. The scoring in the opening game of the Chiefs series with the Loons started in the bottom of the third inning after Chiefs catcher Mario Mercedes drew a free pass to first on a walk. Fransisco Guzman moved Mercedes from first to third with a beautiful piece of hitting. The Chiefs center fielder showed bunt and drew the Loons third baseman Brian Ruggiano in, but pulled the bat back and slapped a double down the third base line to put two Chiefs in scoring position. Hak-Ju Lee came through with an RBI single to right that scored Mercedes and moved Guzman to third. Lee stole second base during Logan Watkins' at bat and Matt Cerda singled up the middle to score Guzman from third. Justin Bour singled to right scoring Lee to make the score 3-0 at the conclusion of the third inning. Trey McNutt's night ended after five dominant innings as he struck out seven and allowed just four base runners. Ronny Morla came in to relieve McNutt in the sixth and made quick work of the Great Lakes hitters retiring them in order with two strikeouts in his first inning of work. Morla ran into Jerry Sands to lead off the seventh inning. Sands is having a great year leading the Midwest league in homeruns (16), he is second in RBI (40), he leads the league in slugging percentage (.665), and is fourth in batting average (.344). Sands hit a solo homerun to left field that almost left the entire stadium. The run was Morla's first allowed since June 1, and it also ended his streak at 15 consecutive batters retired. Morla recovered and got the next three Loons batters in order to finish the inning with the score 3-1. In the Chiefs half of the eighth inning, Cerda drew an inning opening walk. Bour stepped to the plate and would not be overshadowed by the Sands homer the inning before. Bour hammered a two run opposite field shot, giving him four home runs and 37 RBI for the season. That would be all of runs either team would put on the board with a final score of 5-1. McNutt (5-0) pitched five shutout innings, had seven strikeouts to tie his season and career highs, and gave up only three hits and one walk. He has had seven strikeouts on three different occasions this season. Morla had two innings pitched giving up one run on one hit and striking out four while picking up his fifth hold of the year. Leverton finished the game for the Chiefs pitching one shutout inning, giving up one hit and one walk, and striking out one.
