Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 11, 2010) - Facing a four-run ninth inning deficit, the Burlington Bees rallied for two runs and loaded the bases with one out before a double play ball handed the Lansing Lugnuts a 6-4 win in the series opener at Community Field on Friday night.
Facing Midwest League saves leader Steve Turnbull (S, 15), Joey Lewis bounced into the twin killing with the winning run on first base moments after Wil Myers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Myers plate appearance came on the heels on J.D. Alfaro's two-run single that pulled the Bees to within two and chased reliever Brian Slover from the game.
The Bees trailed by as many as five in the contest, with the Lugnuts holding a 6-1 lead as late as the top of the eighth. Burlington scored unearned runs in the seventh and eighth against Evan Crawford and Slover. Both scored on throwing errors: one by Crawford, the other by catcher A.J. Jimenez attempting to throw out Alfaro advancing to third on a walk.
Dusty Odenbach (L, 2-5) made his second start of the season, but did not fare as well as he did in his May 27th win in Clinton. The righty allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in three innings with five strikeouts in the spot start in place of Matt Mitchell, who is away from the team on bereavement leave.
Odenbach was outdueled by Ryan Tepera (W, 6-2), who allowed a single unearned run in seven innings on the hill. He allowed five hits, struck out three, and walked one. Kevin Nolan led the Lansing offense, going 3-for-5 with a triple and a run scored.
The Bees continue a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts tomorrow night at Community Field. We will light up the sky with the second dazzling postgame fireworks display of the season! If you can not make it to the ballpark, listen in at GoBees.com or on News Radio 1490 KBUR for the Casebine Community Credit Union Pregame Show starting at 6:10.
