South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored seven runs in the seventh inning to turn a close game into a rout, beating the South Bend Silver Hawks 8-0 on Friday night. The Silver Hawks were held to just one hit for the second time this season in the loss.

After the two starting pitchers exchanged shutout innings through five, the Kernels finally broke through against Brad Gemberling (LP, 1-4) in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Trout, the league's leading hitter, led off with a double and scored on a triple from Matt Long for the 1-0 Kernels lead. Gemberling settled down and got the next three hitters however, stranding Long at third and keeping it a one run game.

However, Cedar Rapids came back with a vengeance in the bottom of the seventh, scoring seven runs on eight hits to blow the game open. Jeremy Cruz ignited the rally with a deep homer to left, making it a 2-0 Kernels lead. The next three Kernels all singled, with Nolan Brannon picking up a RBI to make it 3-0. After Trout flew out, Long capped a four-for-four night with a RBI single to make it 4-0 and end Gemberling's time on the mound.

Rafael Quezada (ND) came in from the bullpen, but didn't provide much relief. Jean Segura greeted the reliever with a two run single to give Cedar Rapids the 6-0 lead. Casey Hearther then bounced one to Bobby Borchering at third, but the throw was wild to first, with the error resulting in Segura scoring the sixth run of the inning. Jose Jimenez capped the rally with a RBI double to put the Kernels in front 8-0.

The seven runs allowed on eight hits in a single inning both represent new season highs for the Silver Hawks pitching staff.

Chris Owings had the lone hit for the Silver Hawks, a one out single in the fourth inning. Friday was the second time this season South Bend had been one-hit by an opponent, matching the May 6th game at Lansing.

Garrett Richards (WP, 6-3) tossed 6.0 scoreless innings for Cedar Rapids to get the win. Mike Kenney (ND) and Buddy Boshers (ND) completed the one-hit shutout.

The Silver Hawks and Kernels continue the series with game two on Saturday evening, scheduled for a 7:35 PM Eastern Time first pitch. Starting for South Bend will be LHP Mike Belfiore (1-4, 2.67 ERA) while Cedar Rapids will send RHP Manaurys Correa (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 7:15 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
