GENEVA, Ill. - Down, 4-0, through eight innings Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium, the Kane County Cougars rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth before falling short by a run in a 4-3 loss to eh Lake County Captains. The Cougars had more hits in the ninth -- four -- than in the previuos eight frames combined, but Mike Gilmartin was thrown out at the plate on a potential game-tying play.

After managing just two hits in five innings against Captains starter Clayton Cook (2-4) and one in three innings against Jose Flores, the Cougars stormed back in the ninth against Preston Guilmet. Anthony Aliotti singled, Rashun Dixon walked and Kent Walton singled to load the bases. Then Gilmartin drilled a two-run single to cut it to 4-2. Myrio Richard roped an ensuing double to the corner in left to score Walton, but Gilmartin was thrown out at the plate on the same play as he was blocked by the catcher Chun Chen. Pinch-hitter Max Stassi followed with a popup to end the game.

Starter Rob Gilliam (3-5) suffered his fourth loss in five outings. He gave up four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits, walked none and fanned six over six innings. Bo Schultz tossed two scoreless relief innings, and Josh Lansford posted one.

The Cougars (28-34) and Captains (40-21) battle in Game 2 of the series Saturday night at 6 CT. Dan Straily (4-3, 5.25) will face Brett Brach (0-2, 4.5). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online at www.kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
