Kilpatrick's Overtime Goal Gives Cyclones 2-1 Win

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati Cyclones rookie forward Jimmy Kilpatrick scored a power play goal with 8.6 seconds remaining to give the club a 2-1 win over the Dayton Bombers on Saturday night. Kilpatrick's 17th goal came from the top of the right circle to end the game. Ryan Nie set a Cyclones record by winning his first six games with the team, stopping 22 shots. The triumph propelled Cincinnati into second place in the North Division and extended the club's winning streak to six games.

There was no scoring in the first period, but Dayton would outshoot Cincinnati, 8-6, in the frame.

Cincinnati scored the first goal of the game 25 seconds into the second period, as rookie Mark Van Guilder charged down the slot to hammer home his eleventh goal of the campaign. Rookies Jimmy Kilpatrick and J.T. Wyman handed out the assists. The shots on goal favored the Cyclones, 8-6, in the period.

In the third period, Dayton's Mike McLean netted his 15th goal of the season at 6:32-to knot the scores at one apiece. The shots on goal were even at eight each in the third stanza.

In overtime, Dayton had the first solid opportunity to win the game with Dustin Sproat in the penalty box serving a penalty-the Bombers could only muster one shot on goal. Cincinnati's chance with the man-advantage came at 3:42 when Greg Labenski was whistled for holding. That set the stage for Kilpatrick's heroics. Barret Ehgoetz had the only assist on the game ender.

Ryan Nie stopped 22 shots in improving his record with the Cyclones to 6-0. He is the first netminder in team history to win his first six starts with the squad. Paul Drew was the loser for Dayton, also turning aside 22 shots in the defeat.

The Cyclones are now 22-15-5 on the season, while Dayton is 21-17-5. The Cyclones host Elmira on Wednesday (Jan. 28) to close out the three game homestand. It will be a 'Wet Wednesday', where selected domestic beers are priced at one dollar per can.

NOTES: The 8508 fans in attendance for the Cyclones game on Saturday night was the second-largest regular season crowd in team history. The club set its record for regular season attendance on Fan Appreciation Night last season (March 28, 2008) when 9615 turned out to see the Elmira Jackals battle Cincinnati. The team record for attendance was set during Game Six of the Kelly Cup Finals (June 5, 2008) when the Cyclones captured the championship with a 3-1 triumph. A crowd of 12,722 was on hand that night.

With the crowd of 8508, the Cyclones are averaging 31.1 percent more fans than 2007-08 through 22 home games. That is the second-largest improvement from last year through 22 games of any professional hockey team in North America (Tulsa-CHL is up 37.9%). Last year, Cincinnati's season attendance improved 36.8 percent over 2006-07-the biggest increase in all of professional hockey. The Cyclones are averaging 2869 per game, having welcomed 63,719 fans this season.
