Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, N.C. - The Checkers played in front of the second biggest crowd in team history and didn't disappoint the 11,848 in attendance at Time Warner Cable Arena beating the South Carolina Stingrays by a score of 3-2 and moved within two points of the same team for second place in the South Division.

After a scoreless first period, the Checkers got on the board during a power play when David Rutherford blasted a shot over the blocker side of Stingrays netminder Ian Vigier at 8:11. The Stingrays locked the game at 1-1 during a delayed penalty call to Charlotte after Spencer Carbery found a loose puck in front of Checkers goalie Maxime Daigneault and flipped it over his right pad and into the net at 12:14.

It only took 45 seconds for the Checkers to achieve a two goal advantage during the third period. The first of the two goals was tallied on the power play by Jeff Miles when he snuck a shot from the side of the crease past Vigier at 7:07. This was immediately followed by another goal from Rutherford when his quick wrist shot fooled Vigier over the glove at 7:52 putting up the Checkers 3-1. The Stingrays made things interesting when defenseman Nate Kiser's shot found its way past Daigneault at 14:41 cutting the lead to 3-2. It wasn't enough and the Checkers held on to win the contest in front of the second biggest crowd in team history.

Notes: Daigneault turned aside 36 of 38 shots while Vigier stopped 21 of 24...The Checkers scored on two power play chances out of six and held the Stingrays scoreless on four chances...the Checkers lost the first five games to the Stingrays but have won the next five...
