Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels stole a page from South Bend's playbook as they scored five runs in the seventh inning to take the series finale from the Silver Hawks, 10-7, on Monday night in South Bend.
Brad Coon, Larry Infante and Dallas Morris each had three hits and Jordan Renz had 4 RBI as the Kernels tied a season high with 15 hits in the game and set a new team high with five doubles.
The win improves the Kernels second half record to 18-19 and 49-58 overall.
The Kernels scored two runs in the third inning as Anderson Rosario reached on an error and stole second base. Brad Coon drew a walk and both runners moved up a base on a Larry Infante sacrifice bunt. With two out, Jordan Renz hit the first of his two doubles to left scoring Rosario and Coon.
The Silver Hawks scored three in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double by Bryan Byrne and a two run homer by Frank Curreri the key blows.
Cedar Rapids tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth as Brad Coon singled and stole second, his 41st stolen base of the season. The throw went into the outfield and Coon advanced to third on the error. Infante then singled to right to score Coon.
The Kernels trailed 4-3 going into the seventh. With one out, Rosario doubled to center and moved to third on Coon's infield single. Larry Infante hit a ground ball to first and Bryan Byrne fired home as Rosario tried to score from third. Rosario was called safe on a close play and that seemed to ignite the Kernels as Coon scored on a wild pitch, Hainley Statia drew a walk and then Renz stroked his second double of the night, scoring Infante and Statia. An RBI single by Mark Trumbo capped the scoring and gave the Kernels an 8-4 lead.
The Kernels weren't done yet as with two outs in the eighth, Coon singled and advanced to third on Infante's ground rule double. Statia hit his team high 31st double to score Coon and Infante and make the score 10-4 Kernels.
South Bend made some noise in the eighth as they scored three runs off relievers Darren O'Day and Mike Pete. But Ryan Aldrigde came in to slam the door on a Silver Hawk rally and pick up his 22nd save.
O'Day (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Tommy Mendoza. Tommy gave up eight hits and four runs in five innings of work. South Bend reliever Ramon Sanchez (1-9) took the loss.
The Kernels now head to Peoria to open a four game set with the Chiefs. Andy Hill (3-7) starts for the Kernels as Mitch Atkins (9-3) starts for Peoria. Game time is 7 pm and can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com
