Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (August 1, 2006) Chris Nicoll set a season-high and matched a career-high with ten strikeouts, but surrendered two home runs as the Clinton LumberKings (10-29, 33-75) extended the Burlington Bees (15-24, 50-56) losing streak to six with a 5-4 win at Community Field tonight. The win snaps a nine-game losing streak for Clinton.

The Bees got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning against Clinton starter Omar Poveda. Jose Duarte and Mario Lisson had singles and both scored on double to the wall in left by Miguel Vega. Poveda wouldn't allow another run until the eighth as the LumberKings defense helped him out with three double plays.

Nicoll struck out four of the first five batters that he faced to start the ballgame, but Ian Gac ended that streak with solo homer to left in the top of the second to get the LumberKings on the board. Clinton took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Brian Valichka drew a leadoff walk and Matt Smith followed it up with a two-run homer that just snuck over the double-deck wall in right for his second homer of the season. After a base hit by Jose Vallejo, David Peterson hit a ground ball to third. The Bees got the force out at second, but Josh Johnson's throw skipped past Vega at first and he was charged with an error as Peterson raced down to second. After another strikeout, John Mayberry tripled over the head of Duarte in center to drive in Peterson and extend the LumberKings lead to 4-2. Nicoll (4-7) worked through six innings without allowing another run. Rayner Oliveror Oliveros took over in the seventh and finished the final three innings. The LumberKings added their final run against him in the eighth. Terry Blunt singled, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Gac.

The Bees did rally in the bottom of the eighth. Duarte reached on a throwing error by John Whittleman to start the inning, moved to second and third on two groundouts, and scored on a single up the first base line by Vega to cut the lead to 5-3. Jeff Howell followed with another single and the LumberKings replaced Poveda with Jose Marte on the mound. Marte threw a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third and then walked Brady Everett and Carlos Arroyo to force in a run and get the Bees to within one. Marte got out of the jam though when he got Valentino Arce to popout to Whittleman in foul territory at third. Arce did single in the second to extend his season-high hitting streak to eight games. In the bottom of the ninth, Marte allowed a two-out single to Johnson, but got Lisson on a lineout to the warning track in left to end the ballgame for his fifth save. Poveda (3-11) picked up his second win in his last three starts.

The Bees and LumberKings continue this series tomorrow night at 7::00 at Community Field. RH Erik Cordier (1-1, 0.95) will start for the Bees against RH Jake Rasner (4-13, 4.80) for the LumberKings. The gates will open at 6:00 for a Culver's Kids Eat Free Wednesday. All kids 12 and under get a free hot dog and drink and a coupon for custard at Culver's on Roosevelt when they enter the game.
