South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - In order to make a serious push toward the second half Eastern Division title, the South Bend Silver Hawks will have to play well against the team that has the best overall record in the Midwest League and led them by 4.5 games going into play. Tuesday night, the Hawks fell behind, scrapped their way back, but in the end were on the wrong side of a 7-6 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps.
The Whitecaps scored runs in the second, third and fourth innings to climb to a large lead. In the second, Matt Joyce opened with a single and was plated on a run scoring triple by Mike Hollimon, for a 1-0 West Michigan lead. The Whitecaps added their second run of the inning on an RBI single by Justin Justice.
In the second, the Hawks tied the game on back-to-back doubles from Ricardo Sosa and Orlando Mercado. After the Hawks loaded the bases, Leyson Septimo was plunked by Whitecaps starter Sendy Vasquez, knotting the game at two.
The Whitecaps were able to score four runs in the third and the seventh run of the game in the fourth, on a solo blast by Cameron Maybin.
South Bend's attempt to claw back into the game continued in the fifth as Ricardo Sosa's groundout scored Bryan Byrne to pull the Hawks within a 7-3 margin.
The Hawks pulled within one in the sixth. Steve Mena's solo home run made it a 7-4 game. Two batters later, Leyson Septimo doubled and was followed by Justin Upton parking his ninth home run of the season over the wall in left, to get within a run at 7-6.
The Silver Hawks (57-46, 24-14) continue their four game series Wednesday night with the Whitecaps. First pitch is slated for 7:00PM. Wednesday is South Bend Tribune 5-for-$5 night.
