Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Fort Wayne Wizards edged the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-7 Thursday night. Daryl Jones and Josh Alley each drove in a pair of runs for the Wizard. The loss was the fifth straight for the Rattlers.
The teams traded five run second innings. Fort Wayne (52-54 overall, 21-18 second half) struck first. Jones, AJ Davidiuk, and Jodam Rivera each knocked in a run in the inning. Alley capped the inning with a two-run double.
Wisconsin (39-70, 12-27) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. One run scored on an error, the others scored on base hits by Travis Scott, Jeff Flaig, and Eddy Hernandez and a sacrifice fly by Mike Saunders.
Fort Wayne got back in front on a lead off homer by David Freese in the top of the third off losing pitcher Nick Allen.
The pace of the game slowed from that point as Allen and Wizard starting pitcher Jarrett Gardner settled in to keep the offenses off the board.
But, in the sixth, the Wizards padded their lead to 7-5 when Jones greeted Rattler reliever Harold Williams with a long home run to left field.
Robby Hudson brought the Rattlers back to within a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
But, a two-out RBI double by Will Venable in the top of the eighth inning gave the Wizards a two run cushion again at 8-6.
Wizard closer John Madden struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth, but Chris Minaker doubled and Saunders singled him in to make it a one run game again. Then, Saunders stole second to get into scoring position. But, Madden struck out Ron Garth to end the game and preserve the win for the Wizards.
The Rattler and Wizards continue their series Wednesday night. David Asher (1-0, 2.98ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers. Wade LeBlanc (0-0, 0.00ERA) gets the ball for Fort Wayne. Game time is 7:05pm.
