Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs snapped their three-game losing streak, defeating the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-3 Tuesday night at O'Brien Field as starter Mitch Atkins picked up his 10th win of the season. Atkins tied a career-high with eight strikeouts and became just the 53rd pitcher in Chiefs history to record 100 strikeouts in a season.
With the score tied at one, the Chiefs powered themselves to a three-run advantage. Jesus Valdez singled and Ryan Norwood doubled to lead off the inning. Robinson Chirinos came up and rocketed the first pitch he saw from Andy Hill into the lawn in left. One batter later, Yusuf Carter launched his 10th homer of the year, onto the concourse in left to make it a 5-1 game. Cedar Rapids scored single runs in the sixth and seventh and mounted a threat in the ninth, but got no closer as Matt Avery closed the door and ended the rally. The Kernels jumped in front in the second. Mark Trumbo doubled with one away and moved to third on a flyout to center for Anderson Rosario. The Cedar Rapids' left-fielder ripped a sharp single to center to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs used an unearned run to tie it in their half of inning number two. Leading off, Robinson Chirinos reached third after hitting a towering fly ball to left dropped by Rosario. Alberto Garcia came up with an RBI groundout to knot the game at one.
Atkins picked up the win firing five innings and allowing just one run on five hits. Justin Rayborn came on in relief and gave up two runs, one earned, in three innings of work, and Matt Avery tossed a perfect ninth. Kernels' starter Andy Hill suffered the loss going seven innings and allowing all five runs.
