Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

In the sweltering August heat the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays came home to a crowd of 2,132 to take on the Western division leader Kane County Cougars. The Rays defeated the Cougars on Tuesday night by a score of 5-4.

A big four-run fourth inning gave the D-Rays the advantage on Tuesday night. Jason St. Clair got on base first with a double to left field. Cesar Suarez then singled to the short stop advancing St. Clair to third. The Rays best power hitter, J. T. Hall, recorded his 24th double of the year as he drove in St. Clair and advanced Suarez to third. Garrett Groce followed with a walk and Rhyne Hughes proceeded to single up the middle scoring Suarez. With the bases loaded, Chris Cunningham singled through the hole at shortstop and drove home Hall and Groce to give the Devil Rays the 4-1 advantage.

Mike Wlodarczyk took the start for the Rays and lasted six innings. He struck out five and walked three. Wlodarczyk allowed five hits and three runs with only one of them earned. He had the lead when he left the game but the win was squandered in the eighth when Kane County tied the game.

Aaron Walker entered in the seventh and gave up a single to the lead off man. He retired the next three batters he faced. Walker lasted one out into the eighth before closer Greg Dupas entered the game. Walker finished with two strikeouts and he gave up one hit and one earned run.

In the eighth frame, Greg Dupas allowed one of Walker's batters to reach home which blew his save opportunity and the win for Wlodarczyk. Dupas finished with three K's and one hit. He recorded his fourth win of the year in his five outs worth of work.

Chris Cunningham had a solid night at the plate by going 2-3 with a walk and three RBI. Cunningham drove in Cesar Suarez from third base for the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Devil Rays and Cougars will square off again Wednesday morning at 11:05am. The Devil Rays will spend lunch time with area day campers in a special early game. The Rays will also be giving away fielders gloves to the first 200 kids through the gates courtesy of The Dow Chemical Company.
