
Kernels take lead early; hold on late

June 6, 2008 - Jay Brossman and Jeremy Moore homered for the Kernels as they defeated the Burlington Bees in front of 3,021 fans at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The Kernels were outhit by Burlington, 13-12, as every Kernels starter had at least one hit. Moore finished the night 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and Andrew Romine and Tyler Johnson each had a double. Clay Fuller was 2 for 4 and was the only other Kernel with more than one hit.
Kernels starter Mason Tobin allowed a run on six hits and struck out three over four innings. Jordon Towns (2-1) scattered three hits over two scoreless innings for the win and Eddie McKiernan allowed a hit but no runs in 1/3 of an inning for his first save as a Kernel.
Matt Mitchell (3-5) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and struck out four over 5.1 innings for the loss. David Lough was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and 2 RBI and Jamar Walton was 3 for 5 with a run scored.
The win ties the Kernels longest winning streak at three games as they improve to 26-34 on the season. Burlington falls to 25-36.
Game three of this four game series is Saturday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The first 1,000 fans through the gates at 6 pm receive a free set of 2008 Kernels baseball cards, thanks to Perfect Game USA. After the game, enjoy a spectacular fireworks show, presented by Oral B. Game time is 7 pm.
Tickets for Saturday's game are in short supply and cannot be ordered on-line. Please call the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am to check for available seats. The current home series continues through Sunday, June 8.
