West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps, in conjunction with the Detroit Tigers, announced today that infielder Joe Tucker and outfielder Casper Wells have been promoted to Double-A Erie. Replacing Tucker and Wells on the Whitecaps roster will be shortstop Joaquin Guzman and third baseman Hayden Parrott.
After playing 35 games with the Whitecaps in second half of 2007, Tucker returned to West Michigan on the Opening Day roster. Tucker was hitting .275 (38-for-138) with 15 RBI and 17 runs scored while serving as a utility man for the Whitecaps appearing at second base, first base, shortshop and the outfield. Wells was batting .240 with a team-leading 10 home runs and 26 RBI at the time of the promotion. Tucker and Wells were recently named to the Midwest League All-Star game on June 17.
Parrott is in his third season after being selected by the Tigers in the 11th round of the 2006 draft. He hit .291 (57-for-196) with two home runs and 21 RBI in 52 games with the Gulf Coast League Tigers last year. Parrott was born in West Bloomfield, Michigan, but played baseball at Desert Mountain High School in Arizona.
Guzman is in his fourth season of professional baseball and spent all of 2007 with the Gulf Coast League Tigers, hitting .205 with two home runs and 25 RBI in 44 games. The switch-hitting Dominican Republic native was signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on March 7, 2005 and spent two seasons with the Dominican Summer League Tigers in 2005-06. Guzman was on High-A Lakeland's roster at the time of the move, but had not played a game with the Flying Tigers.
In other moves today, former Whitecaps Michael Hollimon (2006) and Brent Clevlen (2005) were called up to Detroit from Toledo while Max Leon (2006) and Wilkin Ramirez (2005) were both promoted to Toledo from Erie.
