Peoria Chiefs News Release
The Peoria Chiefs erased a 4-2 deficit with a three-run seventh inning before Brandon Guyer delivered a walk-off home run, his second of the game, to beat the first place Clinton LumberKings 6-5 on Thursday night at O'Brien Field. The win improves the Chiefs to 25-35 on the season and 14-15 at O'Brien Field.
With the game tied 5-5 entering the ninth inning, Josh Donaldson led the inning off with a deep fly out to the warning track in center. Guyer then hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to the berm in left-center to give the Chiefs the win.
The Chiefs got on the board first against the LumberKings starter Derek Holland in the second inning. Marquez Smith hit his team-high ninth home run, a solo blast to left-center, to put the Chiefs in front 1-0.
Clinton answered back in the third inning against Chiefs starter Dae-Eun Rhee. Dominguez singled to start the inning, and David Paisano reached on a throwing error by Jovan Rosa. After a sacrifice bunt by Lawson moved runners to second and third, Rhee struck out Engel Beltre for the second out in the inning. Renny Osuna reached on the second error of the inning by Rosa to score Dominguez to tie the game 1-1. Rhee struck out Ian Gac to end the inning.
Smith got the lead back for the Chiefs in the third inning against Holland. Nate Samson started the inning by drawing a leadoff walk. After two men were out, Jovan Rosa singled to left to move Samson into scoring position. Smith picked up the second straight two out hit to score Samson and put the Chiefs back on top 2-1.
The LumberKings regained the lead against Craig Muschko in the seventh inning. Jonathan Greene started the inning with a base hit and advanced to third on a double by Paisano. Lawson delivered the second straight double off Muschko to score both Greene and Paisano and put Clinton in front 3-2. Beltre got the third straight hit off Muschko to score Lawson to make it 4-2 but was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
Trailing 4-2, Peoria rallied to regain the lead in the seventh inning against LumberKings reliever Jorge Quintero. Leon Johnson singled to start the inning but was thrown out trying to steal second base. Samson reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and moved to second on a balk by Quintero. Donaldson blooped a single into right field to move Samson to third base with one out. Donaldson stole second base and Dominguez's throw went into center field allowing Samson to score to cut the Chiefs deficit to 4-3. The next batter, Guyer hit a two-run homer to the berm in left-center to give the Chiefs the lead back at 5-4.
The LumberKings put together a ninth inning rally to tie the game against Vento. Matt Lawson singled to start the inning and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position with no outs. Renny Osuna doubled over the head of Guyer in left field to score Lawson and tie the game 5-5. With the potential winning run 90-feet away, Vento struck out Moreland to end the inning.
Rhee, in his second start since returning from the disabled list, worked the first three innings and allowed an unearned run on just one hit. He struck out three batters and walked two while throwing 46 pitches. Blake Parker kept the LumberKings off the board with three innings of relief work. He allowed just two hits and struck out three fresh off his selection as a MWL All-Star. Muschko blew his second straight save allowing three runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings of work while striking out two. Steve Vento got the final out in the eighth inning but gave up a run in the ninth for his first blown save of the season. Vento still managed to pick up his team-leading fifth win, thanks to Guyer's walk off blast.
Player of the Game - Brandon Guyer (LF) - Guyer hit his second home run of the season in the seventh to give the Chiefs back the lead over Clinton 5-4.
