BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (21-13) were the victims of a ninth inning rally from the Cedar Rapids Kernels (15-14) and lost 7-5. C Ronaldo Hernandez went 0-4, ending his 13 game hitting streak.
In the first inning, the Kernels got on the board with a double and a triple, taking a 1-0 lead on RHP Alex Valverde.
The Hot Rods tied it in the bottom of the first on a triple by 2B Vidal Brujan, followed by an RBI groundout from SS Taylor Walls, and it was 1-1.
Bowling Green sent six batters to the plate in the second, and used three straight hits to grab a 3-1 lead.
After Cedar Rapids tied it in the third, Bowling Green took the lead again in the fourth, with the help of three Kernel errors, and it was 5-3 Hot Rods.
Cedar Rapids tied the game with two in the fifth, highlighted by a home run to right center, and the game stayed tied until the ninth inning.
In the final frame, the Kernels sent seven batters to the plate, and, with a walk and three singles, took a 7-5 lead that became the final score.
Valverde did not receive a decision. He threw five innings, allowing eight hits and five runs (all earned), walking four and striking out 5. LHP Ivan Pelaez (0-1, 5.40) took the loss, throwing two innings, allowing three hits and two runs (both earned), walking one and striking out three.
The Hot Rods and Kernels will have a rubber match tomorrow at 6:35pm in the homestand finale. LHP Josh Fleming (1-0, 0.00) will get the start for the Hot Rods, while the Kernels will counter with LHP Bryan Sammons (0-3, 3.00). First pitch from Bowling Green Ballpark is set for 6:35pm.
