South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs pushed the first place Clinton LumberKings to the limit on Thursday night at Four Winds Field. They forced extra innings, but it was Clinton who came out on top 4-3.

In a game where Cubs starter Javier Assad worked out of two separate bases loaded jams and then another with runners at second and third without any damage, South Bend got break after break but ultimately could not capitalize.

The Cubs never took the lead in the game, but they seemed to have an answer to everything Clinton threw at them. The scoring did not open until the top of the 7th inning when Jack Larsen scored the game's first run on a Johnny Adams RBI double down the left field line. South Bend answered in the bottom of the inning after Michael Cruz doubled to start the frame. Cruz reached third and was brought in on a Rafael Narea ground out to tie the game.

With no scoring in the 8th or 9th inning, the Cubs went to extra innings only for the second time this season, and first at Four Winds Field. Manuel Rodriguez came into pitch the 10th. On the first pitch Rodriguez offered, Larsen came to the plate again and launched his sixth home run of the season to give the LumberKings the 3-1 lead. With the new rule of a runner automatically being placed at second base to start an extra frame, it was a two run shot.

South Bend did not back down, however.

In the bottom of the inning, with Narea starting at second base, Zach Davis drove in Narea on an RBI single to get the Cubs within a run. Two batters later, Jared Young singled in the game tying run to score Davis and the game was tied 3-3.

Clinton wasted no time in the 11th inning and scored their runner from second Dimas Ojeda on a ground ball from Joseph Rosa to regain the lead 4-3. Despite having two base runners in the bottom of the 11th, the Cubs could not score either and the LumberKings walked away with the 4-3 extra innings win.

With the loss, South Bend drops to 13-17 on the season. They continue to battle with the Lake County Captains and Fort Wayne TinCaps, as all three teams continue to switch places in the division race.

The Cubs will face the LumberKings again tomorrow night from Four Winds Field. First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m. Left hander Brendon Little is scheduled to take the mound for South Bend.
