Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - Behind a four-run fifth inning, the Kernels turned a 2-1 hole into a 5-2 lead Thursday night to grab game three of the series over Wisconsin 6-2.

After the Timber Rattlers notched nine runs in the win on Wednesday, Wisconsin got on the board right away in the top of the first on Thursday. To begin the game, Luis Lara singled and moved to second on a throwing error. Three batters later, Mike Boeve drove him home with a base hit to put the Rattlers on top 1-0.

In the bottom half of the first inning, Cedar Rapids responded. A one-out Emmanuel Rodriguez single gave the Kernels a base runner, and a wild pitch moved him up to second base. With Rodriguez on second and now two outs, Jorel Ortega evened the game with an RBI double to right to make it 1-1 after the first inning.

That was the score until the top of the fifth inning. On the first pitch of the frame, Je'Von Ward launched a solo home run to give Wisconsin the lead again at 2-1.

But that advantage would not last. In the bottom of the fifth frame, Misael Urbina led off by legging out a hustle double. After a flyout moved Urbina to third base, Mikey Perez was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. The next batter, Ben Ross, then singled through the left side to score Urbina and tie the game at two. Behind him, Rodriguez gave the Kernels their first lead with an RBI groundout, leaving one on and two out for Kala'i Rosario, who cranked his 17th home run of the season, a two-run blast to put the Kernels up by three at 5-2.

That stayed the score until the bottom of the eighth inning. With the bases full and one, Rodriguez drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to put the Kernels up 6-2, the score which would be the final.

Andrew Morris picked up his third straight win on the mound for the Kernels. The right-hander went 5.0 innings, allowing two runs, one earned on six hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. Jordan Carr, behind him out of the bullpen, continued his stretch of excellence going 3.0 scoreless one-hit innings with six strikeouts and no walks; the southpaw has now not allowed an earned run in 11 straight outings. A.J. Labas then finished the Cedar Rapids win with a scoreless top of the ninth.

The win for the Kernels (68-43) is their 26th in 33 home games since the start of June and second in this series with Wisconsin (48-61). Game four of the set is scheduled for Friday night at 6:35, with Cory Lewis on the mound for Cedar Rapids opposite Tyler Woessner.
