Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Appleton, WI - The combination of Cory Lewis and Mike Paredes combine to throw nine one-hit innings as the Kernels pitch their way to a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin to win their sixth straight game.
After the Kernels finished the series against Peoria, taking the final five games of the set, Cedar Rapids got off on the right foot on Tuesday in Wisconsin. In the top of the second, two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out for Kyler Fedko, who produced the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to give the Kernels the early 1-0 edge.
In the bottom of the third, Wisconsin answered with a run of their own. Je'Von Ward walked and stole second to begin the inning, then with two outs, Robert Moore tied the game with an RBI single but was thrown out going for second to end the inning with the score even at 1-1.
That hit was the only one allowed by Kernels starter Cory Lewis. The right-hander improved to 4-0 with Cedar Rapids throwing five innings, allowing a run on a hit and a walk while picking up three strikeouts in just 59 pitches.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Kernels took the lead they would never lose. Andrew Cossetti doubled to begin the inning, then a Kyler Fedko single put runners on the corners with no outs. After a strikeout, Emmanuel Rodriguez delivered a sac fly to center to put Cedar Rapids back ahead 2-1.
That lead was all that Kernels' reliever Mike Pardes needed. Coming on out of the bullpen to begin the sixth inning, Pardes went the rest of the way, not allowing a hit over the final four frames walking just two batters and striking out three.
Cedar Rapids give Pardes some insurance in the top of the eighth inning. To lead off the frame, Kala'i Rosario crushed a home run to left field to match the league high with 14 on the year and to give the Kernels a 3-1 advantage.
In the top of the ninth inning, Andrew Cossetti began the frame with a bang. The first baseman rocketed a solo shot out of the stadium in left to increase the Cedar Rapids lead to 4-1, the score which would be the final.
The win for the Kernels is their sixth straight and fourth in a row in the season series against Wisconsin. The two sides play game two of the series tomorrow afternoon at 12:10 with C.J. Culpepper on the mound opposite Cameron Wagoner.
