
Kernels complete sweep of River Bandits with 3-1 win

The Cedar Rapids Kernels completed a four game series sweep of the Quad Cities River Bandits, 3-1, in front of 4.404 fans at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
Kernels starter Esmerlin Jimenez (5-6) allowed a run on five hits and struck out a season-high 11 River Bandits and Tim Kiely struck out two in the ninth for his second save. Jeremy Moore led the Kernels offense with two hits and scored a key insurance run in the eighth on a passed ball.
Hector Estrella broke open a tie game in the seventh inning with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, and Clay Fuller added an RBI sac fly. Gabe Jacobo was 1 for 4 as the Kernels had five hits in the game.
Quad Cities starter Nick Addition (9-5) was the tough luck loser, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five over seven innings. Carlos Pupo tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the third inning.
The win improves the Kernels second half record to 25-20 and 58-56 overall as they head into a big weekend series with the Burlington Bees. The Kernels won their fourth series in a row, dating back to West Michigan (July 26-28) as they have won 11 of their last 13 games and finished the 10-game home stand with an 8-2 record.
The Kernels hit the road for eight games in seven days at Burlington and Kane County.
