Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs were no-hit by the first-place Burlington Bees in a 10-0 loss on Thursday night. Only three Chiefs batters reached base during the game, all of which occurred due to walks. The loss drops the Chiefs to 23-23 in the second half and 53-61 on the season as they fall to a tie for fifth place with Beloit, five and a half games out of first place.
David Lough led off the game with a single to left against Chiefs starter Jose Pina. Johnny Giavotella reached first on an error by first baseman Luis Bautista, and Mike Moustakas drove Lough home with a double to center. Clint Robinson struck out, leaving runners at second and third, but the bases were loaded by Pina as he hit Nick Francis with a pitch. Jamar Walton singled up the middle, scoring Giavotella and Moustakas for a 3-0 Bees lead. Nick Van Stratten was the second batter of the inning to be hit by a pitch, reloading the bases. Pina finally got the Chiefs out of the jam as Juan Rivera grounded into a double play to end the inning with the Bees up 3-0.
After Bees starter Danny Duffy retired the Chiefs in order, the Bees came back in the second to score two more run. Ryan Eigsti singled to left to start the inning, and Lough flew out to left for the first out. Giavotella had a single of his own to right field, followed by another single to right by Moustakas to score Eigsti. Robinson added the third straight base hit to score Giavotella for another run for the Bees, putting them further ahead 5-0. The Chiefs brought in John Muller to relieve Pina, and Muller got the Chiefs out of the inning with a fly out to center and a ground out, leaving two runners on.
The Bees continued to monopolize the scoring with another run in the third against Muller. With one out, Rivera and Eigsti each singled, and Lough added a single of his own to score Rivera to put the Bees up 6-0. Muller got the Chiefs second out as Lough got caught in a rundown trying to steal second, and he the inning ended as Giavotella struck out.
The Bees didn't falter in the fourth as they continued to score, adding another run to their lead. Robinson was walked by Muller with one out, and Francis doubled to center to score Robinson from first and make it 7-0 in favor of the Bees.
Despite finally keeping the Bees from scoring for two innings, Burlington came back in the seventh with three more runs to add over the Chiefs and reliever Josh Whitlock. Walton singled to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Van Stratten walked, and Rivera reached on a fielders choice while Walton went to third to put runners at the corners. Eigsti popped out for the Bees second out of the frame before Walton was able to score on a passed ball by Chiefs catcher Mario Mercedes. Lough then doubled home Rivera, and Giavotella in turn singled home Lough as Harrison fell down in right field. Moustakas flew out to left to end the inning with the Bees further ahead at 10-0.
The only drama remaining over the last three innings would be whether or not the Chiefs would pick up a hit. Juan Abreu relieved Danny Duffy to start the seventh and struck out two as he retired the Chiefs in order. With one out in the eight, Nick Francis made a nice running catch in left to rob Rebel Ridling of a potential bloop single. Abreu then retired Jake Opitz on a flyout to end the eighth. Abreu racked up two quick ninth-inning outs before walking Josh Harrison. He finished off the no-no by striking out Nate Samson to end the game.
The Chiefs only had three baserunners on the night. Luis Bautista was walked in the second by Bees starter Danny Duffy and was thrown out on his way to second as Mercedes reached on the fielders choice. Ridling was left on as he reached on a fielders choice and Mercedes was thrown out. Opitz reached on a walk as well in the third and was the only runner to move into scoring position as he advanced to second on a wild pitch by Duffy.
For the Bees, Duffy threw the first six hitless innings, walking two and striking out four. He left the game after throwing exactly 70 pitches. Abreu picked up his seventh save of the season by finishing off the no-hitter over the last three innings. He walked one and struck out five.
Pina threw just one and a third innings for the Chiefs as he allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits. He did not issue a walk, hit two batters and struck out on. Muller threw two and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs, both of which were earned, and four hits while walking one and striking out two. Whitlock threw another three innings, walking two and striking out one as he allowed three runs, all earned, on three hits. Chris Siegfried threw an inning, allowing no hits or runs while just walking one batter, and Steve Vento threw one inning as well, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
