Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind. - Three Lansing errors played a factor in every South Bend run Thursday night, as they blanked the Lansing Lugnuts 9-0 at Coveleski Stadium Thursday night. It marks the second time this series that Lansing has been shutout and is also the third time in the Lugnuts last four meetings with South Bend that they have failed to score.
The Silver Hawks jumped ahead of Lansing in the first inning. With a runner at first and one man out, Taylor Harbin bounced an apparent double-play ball to shortstop Justin Jackson. However he was unable to handle it, as the error allowed the runners to move to second and third base. After Sean Coughlin was hit by a pitch, Derrick Walker laced a single into right field that scored both Collin Cowgill and Harbin.
Two batters later, Eli Rumler came through for the Hawks with a two-run single of his own, capping the first inning at 4-0 in favor of South Bend.
After the Silver Hawks added another run in the third due to a John Tolisano error at second, they capped it off in the eighth with four more.
With two on, Harbin reached on an error by Kevin Ahrens, keeping the inning alive. Sean Coughlin then stepped up and hammered a grand slam over the right field wall, making it a 9-0 game.
Cristian Beltre (10-7) picked up the win with six great innings of work for South Bend. He allowed just two hits and retired the final 11 batters that he faced. He also struck out six.
South Bend's pitching staff allowed just two Lugnuts to reach scoring position in the game. Both men got there in the eighth frame.
Luis Perez (5-9) took the loss for Lansing after allowing five runs, two earned, over 2 2/3 innings.
Only two of the nine runs that the Lugnuts gave up in the game were earned to the pitching staff.
Lansing (64-52, 25-21) will go after a series split with South Bend (62-53, 29-17) as they conclude the series Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
