Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
CLINTON, IA - Blake Beavan recorded a professional career-high nine strikeouts and led Clinton LumberKings to a 3-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night at Alliant Energy Field. Solo homers by Cristian Santana and Matt Lawson gave Clinton all the offense they would need.
The Rattlers (14-33 second half, 45-68 overall) loaded the bases with one out in the first inning against Clinton starting pitcher Blake Beavan. But, Beavan got out of the inning by getting an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. He went on to retire the next nine batters -- and 14 of the final 15 -- he faced.
While Beavan was mowing down Rattler hitters, his offense was getting him the lead. Clinton loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and scored a run when Mitch Moreland grounded into a force play at second base.
Santana, who homered in the eighth inning of Thursday's game, hit a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning on Friday. That homer, his eleventh of the season, gave the L-Kings (25-22, 66-48) a 2-0 lead.
Clinton scored their next run on another home run. Lawson hit a two-out, solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning and the LumberKings were up 3-0.
Beavan left the game after retiring the side in order in the top of the sixth. He recorded his final two strikeouts of the night and put himself in a position to win his third straight game.
Chris Dennis worked a pair of scoreless frames out of the Clinton bullpen.
Wisconsin avoided the shutout with an unearned run in the top of the ninth off Adalberto Flores. Joe Dunigan's sacrifice fly drove home Denny Almonte to make the score 3-1. Flores struck out the next batter to end the game and get his twelfth save of the season.
The Rattlers return home to begin a quick four-game homestand against the Kane County Cougars on Saturday night. The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Saturday night will receive a bobblehead of ESPN SportsCenter anchor John Anderson, who will also make an appearance at the game. There is also a fireworks display scheduled for after the game.
Michael Pineda (7-5, 2.29) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Kane County will send Scott Hodsdon (5-8, 3.34) to the mound. Saturday's game time is 6:35pm at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.
